Boating Goes Digital: The Marine Electronics Powering Our New Fat Cat Builds

Boats have quietly caught up to everything else in your life. Your truck talks to your phone, your thermostat learns your schedule, and now the boat tied up at the dock can do the same kind of thing — if it's built that way from the ground up.

That's exactly what's happening right now at our Aransas Pass facility on the new Fat Cat Phantom builds, and we wanted to pull back the curtain on what "going digital" actually means for a boat owner.

A Single Network, Not a Tangle of Wires

Older boats run point-to-point: every switch, every gauge, every accessory gets its own dedicated wire back to a panel. It works, but it's a lot of copper, a lot of connection points, and a lot of places for something to eventually go wrong.

The Phantom builds are getting something different — an NMEA 2000 network backbone. Think of it as the boat's own data highway. The engine, the displays, the switching system, and the audio source all talk to each other over one shared network instead of a hundred separate wires.

Digital Switching — Less Wire, More Precision

To be clear, the wires to each component don't disappear — the bilge pump, nav lights, and livewell still each need a wire running back to something. What changes is how that wiring works. Instead of a full point-to-point run from every physical toggle switch at the helm out to its component, each accessory gets one precise, correctly-sized run back to the Garmin Boat Switch, and the actual switching decision happens digitally instead of through a mechanical toggle. Less wire overall, and what's there is doing its job more precisely — including the circuit protection itself. Each circuit runs through a digital breaker that's monitored electronically: if something pulls too much current, it trips digitally and can be reset from the touchscreen instead of someone hunting through a panel with a flashlight for a blown fuse.

Lighting gets the same treatment. Certain channels on the switch are built specifically for dimmable lighting — tap to turn a light on or off, press and hold to bring it up or down, and it remembers the brightness level it was last set to. It's a small thing, but it's one more function that used to require its own physical dimmer switch and now just lives on the same screen as everything else.

The system doesn't just switch things on and off — it watches them, too. Bilge pump activity and battery voltage show up in real time on the display, so instead of just hoping the bilge pump is doing its job, an owner can actually see it cycle. The livewell gets its own dedicated logic: a built-in timer cycles the pump automatically to keep water moving and fish alive, rather than relying on someone remembering to run it manually — which also means less wear on the pump itself over time.

And because the whole system shares one network, everything is monitored across all three displays at the helm — the 12" GPSMAP MFD and both 5" TD 50 touchscreens — not just wherever the one switch happened to be mounted.

Built Like a Vehicle — Deutsch Connectors and a Pre-Wired Harness

The connection style matters just as much as the network itself. Instead of heat-shrink butt connectors — the traditional splice-and-shrink method used throughout the marine industry — these builds are wired entirely with Deutsch connectors: the same sealed, gasketed, weatherproof connectors used in off-road and automotive applications where vibration and moisture resistance actually matter. They lock together, they seal against saltwater and humidity, and a component can be unplugged and swapped without cutting a single wire or reworking a splice.

That's paired with a pre-wired harness, built the way a vehicle's wiring harness is built — one clean, organized run instead of wiring pieced together component by component on the boat. The result is a lot less clutter behind the console, a build that goes together more consistently from boat to boat, and — because there isn't a snarl of individual wire runs taking up space — more usable storage room for the owner.

One Screen, Full Picture

At the helm, a Garmin GPSMAP 12" display anchors the system, paired with two additional 5" TD 50 touchscreen displays — one dedicated to engine data, one dedicated to switching and systems. Engine data, switching status, and audio control are all viewable and controllable from the main display, so the owner isn't hunting across three different panels to understand what the boat is doing.

Trim Tabs, Modernized

The build also incorporates new Sea Star trim tabs, bringing the same level of precision and responsiveness to trim control that the rest of the electronics package brings to everything else.

Beyond the Helm — Where the Garmin Ecosystem Can Go

Once a boat is built around a Garmin network, the helm isn't the only place the system can be seen or controlled from. A few things worth knowing about, depending on what a build calls for:

  • Power-Pole and trolling motor integration — Garmin's ecosystem supports coordinating compatible trolling motors and Power-Pole shallow-water anchors through the same network, including automation like the anchor stowing itself when the trolling motor is stowed. What's actually compatible depends on which trolling motor is spec'd on a given build.

  • quatix marine smartwatches — Garmin's dedicated marine smartwatch line can pull real-time boat data — depth, speed, heading, wind — right to an owner's wrist, and on certain models, even issue voice commands to the chartplotter or control the trolling motor and onboard audio system without touching the helm at all.

  • Docking assistance and OneHelm — Garmin's Surround View camera system helps take the guesswork out of docking, and the OneHelm integration hub is built to bring compatible third-party marine electronics — lighting, stabilization, and more — into the same one-screen control point.

None of this is required to make a boat "digital" — the network and the switching are what do that. But it shows how much room there is to grow the system as an owner's needs change, without tearing anything out to add it.

Why This Matters for You, Not Just the Build

None of this is technology for technology's sake. A networked, digitally switched boat with sealed connectors and a clean harness is easier to diagnose, easier to live with, and holds up better over years on saltwater than a boat wired the old way. It's also simply where the industry is headed, and the Boat Werx team believes owners deserve to understand what's actually going into a build before they ever step aboard.
